We're different than other shelters

Bide Awhile is special. It’s a place where animals can feel safe and cared-for while they wait for their permanent home. We’re different than other shelters. We believe that difference is our respect for and commitment to our relationships with our animal companions. These ideals not only provide the foundation for our values and our mission statement, they’re evident in everything that we do.

At Bide Awhile Animal Shelter, you’ll find a number of pets waiting for the right person to come along and give them a better life.

We need plenty of volunteers with a variety of experience and skills. You’ll be carefully matched with a program that interests you—and needs you

Bide Awhile Animal Shelter has cared for homeless cats and dogs in metro Halifax since 1969. There are several ways you can donate and fundraise. We deeply appreciate your support.

  • Our AGM & Summer Open House are POSTPONED!
Please note we are currently working to find a new date in the fall.  We will keep you updated on our website and social media.

  • Bide Awhile has a new email!
For any animal related questions or concerns, please email our Animal Care Manager, Jennifer, at shelter@bideawhile.org.

  • Meet our adoptable cats and dogs!
Our open concept cat room helps our animals’ personalities shine! After our pets have had their health checked, are vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, spayed or neutered, tested for feline leukemia and have had bloodwork completed, they are socialized in our main cat room. They live here at the shelter until their forever family comes to meet them! As we get to know our animals’ quirks and habits during their stay, we are able to match them with the right fit based on lifestyle and personality. These cats and dogs are waiting patiently for a second chance at a forever family!

  • February 2019, our adoption fees for cats will be increasing to $180
This increase will help subsidize the rising costs associated with their care. Aside from the small increase in fees, nothing else will change; all of our cats will continue to be vaccinated, dewormed, tested for feline leukemia, spayed or neutered, microchipped, groomed, socialized and receive any other treatment/care that will ensure they leave with a clean bill of health. Our adoption fees for dogs will remain the same at $220. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Bide Awhile receives $5,000 grant from CanFel Foundation
To support our Low Cost Spay and Neuter Program, the CanFel Foundation has granted Bide Awhile $5,000. Our Program helps low income individuals spay or neuter their pets to reduce pet overpopulation in our community. CanFel is a registered charity that is designated as a public foundation. It was established and generously funded by the late Sandra Bond in support of animal welfare. Thank you so much, CanFel.
