We're different than other shelters

Bide Awhile is special. It’s a place where animals can feel safe and cared-for while they wait for their permanent home. We’re different than other shelters. We believe that difference is our respect for and commitment to our relationships with our animal companions. These ideals not only provide the foundation for our values and our mission statement, they’re evident in everything that we do.

At Bide Awhile Animal Shelter, you’ll find a number of pets waiting for the right person to come along and give them a better life.

We need plenty of volunteers with a variety of experience and skills. You’ll be carefully matched with a program that interests you—and needs you

Bide Awhile Animal Shelter has cared for homeless cats and dogs in metro Halifax since 1969. There are several ways you can donate and fundraise. We deeply appreciate your support.

  • Meet our Pet of the Week!
From cute and cuddly to energetic and snuggly, we have up to 100 cats and six dogs at the shelter at any given time. Each week we select one of our many adoptables and share their quirks with you on the Pet of the Week page and on social media. This week’s Pet of the Week is Immanuel, a handsome five-year-old, who is waiting in our open concept cat room to meet his forever family.

  • Plan ahead and do NOT leave pets or people in parked cars
Summer is in full swing across the country, and that means that leaving pets, children – anyone – in a parked car makes them susceptible to heat stroke, brain damage and even death. Even if the window is cracked and you’re parked in the shade, the inside temperature of a vehicle becomes too hot too quickly for anyone to withstand. Keep your human and furry friends safe by not leaving them in the car.

  • Meet our adoptable cats and dogs!
Our open concept cat room helps our animals’ personalities shine! After our pets have had their health checked, are vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, spayed or neutered, tested for feline leukemia and have had bloodwork completed, they are socialized in our main cat room. They live here at the shelter until their forever family comes to meet them! As we get to know our animals’ quirks and habits during their stay, we are able to match them with the right fit based on lifestyle and personality. These cats and dogs are waiting patiently for a second chance at a forever family!

  • Do you need help caring for your pet’s new litter?
We are offering to spay your mother cat or dog at no cost to you, and under our care, will have all kittens or pups vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, spayed/neutered, tested for feline leukemia, health checked and adopted to a loving, forever home. Call 902-469-9578 to learn more about this limited offer.

  • Do you love cats? Do you love yoga? We’ve got the event for you!
Combining exercise and kitty-cuddles, Cat Yoga is back at Bide Awhile this fall. Our first session takes place on Saturday, September 22 at 12pm, with a second session immediately following at 1pm. More dates TBA!  Register today for just $20 a session!

  • Do you want to be part of the Kennel Klub?
Contributions from our supporters are our sole means of financial support. Making a regular monthly donation to our Kennel Klub helps us plan and budget our resources. At the end of the year, we’ll send you a tax receipt for your total donation. To join the Klub click here.
