Not Giving Up Hope | Bumble’s Story
How does a cat go from being completely health to unexpectedly paralyzed in 6 weeks?
Bumble was part of a small colony of cats who were left behind when their previous owner moved. The neighbour noticed these cats and began caring for them until a partner rescue, 9-Lives Cat Rescue, was able to step in with assistance. Through their programs, they were able to safely bring two pregnant females (Bumble & Bee) into their care and spay/neuter the remaining cats in the colony.
On May 19th, Bumble and Bee were transferred into our care at Bide Awhile. Both girls had exams done that noted nothing out of the ordinary – they were both friendly, healthy, and pregnant. Just two weeks later, on May 29th, Bumble gave birth to 5 beautiful kittens. She soon after developed a very bad case of upper respiratory infection, so Bee took on the role of mother and provided for the kittens while Bumble recovered.
Both Bumble, Bee, and the babies were sent into a foster home together so they could grow, and Bee could be in a more comfortable environment for her birth. Within a month of being in foster, Bee gave birth to her own babies.
Out of the blue we received a call from the foster stating that Bumble was alive but was unable to move her body. We quickly rushed her to the emergency clinic where we were unable to get a conclusive diagnosis. Being 10PM on the Canada Day Long Weekend, Bumble was transferred to a secondary clinic for hospitalization and further diagnostics.
Unfortunately, after all of this, we still did not have a conclusive diagnosis, but we had a plan. Bumble was put on a 38-day trial of antibiotics, pain management, and daily fluids. While we weren’t sure what the outcome would be, we could see her will to live and wanted to give her everything we could in one last effort to keep her with us.
Miraculously, over the past three weeks Bumble has been showing signs of hope. She’s now able to lift her front legs, and her back legs are showing signs of movement. While she’s not out of the woods yet, Bumble is a strong-willed girl and we’re hopeful for her recovery.
While we wish we could run all the diagnostic tests in the world, there’s no guarantee that we would have any answers, and we sadly don’t have the funding for that. Bumble is improving but has a long road ahead of her. We’re raising funds for our animal care through monthly 50/50 raffles and need your help. For as little as $10 you can help make a difference for animals like Bumble.
